The Fall of Brackenhold

The Fall of Brackenhold

Description

The Fall of Brackenhold is the opening attack of the Burrowed Crown trilogy. During the Remembrance Gathering, Ratkyn forces led by Malakar assault the peaceful Skwirl village, burning it to the ground and killing or capturing most of its inhabitants.

Events

The attack begins during the celebration when arrows rain down on the village. The Ratkyn use both conventional weapons and Noctimancy — corrupted blades that distort the air and inflict supernatural wounds.

Key events:

  1. The raid begins with arrows and firebombs
  2. Villagers scatter in chaos
  3. Elder Thorne is killed by Malakar when he refuses to submit
  4. Silas discovers his Ardenfire abilities when the wind deflects arrows aimed at him
  5. Yrenna (Silas's mother) jumps in front of an arrow meant for Silas and dies in his arms
  6. Silas escapes into the Deepwood, Nyra and Fyn escaping separately
  7. Brackenhold burns to the ground

Significance

This attack sets the entire trilogy in motion. It:

  • Reveals Silas as the Heir of the First Song
  • Kills Silas's mother Yrenna (his motivation)
  • Unites Silas, Nyra, and Fyn as survivors
  • Introduces Malakar as the primary antagonist
  • Establishes Noctis's forces as the threat

Aftermath

The survivors scatter across Sylvanholt. Silas begins his journey to discover his destiny and understand the Song.
