Brackenhold
Description
Brackenhold is a Skwirl village woven between root and sky — built not only in the trees, but through them. It's located in the Deepwood, at the edge of the forest.
The village consists of:
- Vine-wrapped footbridges connecting tree hollows
- Broad walkways wrapped around trunks like braided rope
- Vine-bridges stretching between hollows, swaying gently
- Lookout posts and rope-ladders leading to upper platforms in the canopy
- Burrow-paths spiraling down into the earth, connecting lower tiers of shops, homes, and storerooms
- Central gathering platform — a wide, woven span of timber and vine where festivals, storyfires, and village votes are held
- Treehouse nests — individual family homes in the tree hollows
The village is lit by firefly lanterns (glass domes with glowing insects inside) and glowroot lanterns (bioluminescent bulbs).
Significance
Brackenhold is Silas's home — the only home he's ever known. It represents the peaceful life before the raid.
History
In Book I, Brackenhold is attacked by Ratkyn forces under Malakar during the Remembrance Gathering. The village is burned, many inhabitants killed or captured, and the survivors scatter. This event sets the entire trilogy in motion.
